Gracias San Antonio: Children Are Citizens Project is grounded in the belief that children are not just future citizens but also citizens in the here and now with the right to express their opinions and participate in the civic and cultural life of San Antonio. As citizens, children also learn to become active contributors to making their city a better place to work, play, and live.

Pre-K 4 SA Children Selects DaisyCares

In November, Pre-K 4 SA children voted in a school-wide election to support DaisyCares, a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide pet food, emergency funding aid toward veterinary care, and reduce animal abuse through animal welfare education and awareness. DaisyCares supports thousands of families and pet owners members every year through ongoing animal advocacy, veterinarian support programs, and educational resources.

City Explorations

Children and families learned more about San Antonio and drew creative inspiration from visits to locations such as Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair, Denman Estate Park, Brackenridge Park, the Japanese Tea Garden, San Antonio Museum of Art, Ruby City, Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s Lights of Esperanza, Muertos Fest, Woodlawn Lake, Semmes Library, the San Antonio Botanical Garden, the Museum Reach of the San Antonio Riverwalk, Landa Library, and the University of the Incarnate Word

Gracias San Antonio Exhibit

This year, 19 local artists with varying styles and techniques joined our children in classrooms to help them make unique works of art that reflect the energy and inspiration they gained from their explorations. The 113 pieces created included paintings, collages, sculptures, drawings, textiles, mosaics, and mixed-media works.

Pre-K 4 SA partnered with the Central Library to host an exhibit showcasing children’s artwork, offering the public a chance to see San Antonio through the eyes of Pre-K 4 SA children. After the exhibit, the artwork was auctioned online for two weeks, with all proceeds benefiting DaisyCares. Winning bids ranged from $2 to $350, showing our community’s enthusiasm for our children’s creativity, support for the mission of the Gracias project, and proof of the positive impact that civic engagement can make.
