Fun and Healthy Snacks: Trail Mix and Infused Water

At Pre-K 4 SA, we strive to provide our students with engaging and educational experiences. Our CHEF partnership not only introduces children to the joy of cooking but also teaches them the importance of healthy food choices. These two October recipes, Trail Mix and Infused Water are delicious and promote good nutrition habits that will benefit our young learners for years. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your ingredients, and let the culinary adventures begin!

 

Trail Mix: A Nutritious Snack Adventure

Ingredients:

  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Dried Cranberries
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Banana Chips
  • Cheerios
  • Wheat Chex (or substitute with popcorn)

Instructions:

  1. Start by setting out all the ingredients on a clean, dry surface.
  2. Invite your little chefs to participate by using child-safe kitchen tools and supervision.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the following:
    1. 1 tablespoon of pumpkin seeds
    2. 1 tablespoon of dried cranberries
    3. 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips
    4. 1/4 cup of pretzels
    5. 1/4 cup of Cheerios
    6. 1/4 cup of Wheat Chex (or popcorn)
  4. Mix everything thoroughly, ensuring that each ingredient is evenly distributed.

Trail mix is an ideal snack for everyone. It’s packed with various flavors and textures that can pique a child’s interest and satisfy their taste buds. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to introduce healthy ingredients like seeds, dried fruits, and whole grains into their diet.

 

Infused Water: Hydration with a Twist

Ingredients:

  • Water
  • Herbs (Basil & Mint)
  • Blueberries
  • Cucumber
  • Lime

Instructions:

  1. Start by pouring water into a kid-friendly cup or container.
  2. Explore the herbs with your child. Allow them to smell the basil and mint leaves, and add one of each to the cup.
  3. Encourage them to use their senses to explore the fruits. Have them smell each one and add one blueberry, one cucumber slice, and a small lime wedge to the cup.
  4. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse into the water.
  5. Finally, taste the water and enjoy the refreshing hydration.

Infused water is a fantastic way to make staying hydrated fun and flavorful. It introduces children to the concept of natural flavors without added sugars, making it an excellent alternative to sugary beverages.
